Open-Ended Straight Draw (OESD)

An open-ended straight draw (OESD) is one of the strongest drawing hands in poker. It means you’re only one card away from completing a straight, and either end of the sequence can finish your hand. Because there are two possible card ranks that help you, an open-ended straight draw has a higher probability of improving than many other draws.

Open-ended straight draw example

Imagine you’re holding 7♠️ 8♦️, and the flop is: 5♣️ 6♥️ K♠️

You already have four consecutive cards: 5–6–7–8

Now you can complete your straight with either:

  • a 4, making 4–5–6–7–8, or
  • a 9, making 5–6–7–8–9.

This is exactly what makes the draw “open-ended.”

How many outs does an OESD have

An open-ended straight draw usually has 8 outs. There are four cards of the lower rank and four cards of the higher rank that complete your straight. More outs mean better odds of improving your hand before the river.

Open-ended straight draw vs. gutshot draw

These two draws are often confused. An open-ended straight draw can be completed by two different card ranks, giving you 8 outs. A gutshot straight draw (also called an inside straight draw) can only be completed by one specific card rank, giving you just 4 outs. Because of this, open-ended straight draws are much more valuable and are played more aggressively.

Should you bet with an open-ended straight draw?

In many situations, yes. An OESD has enough equity to justify calling bets, semi-bluffing, or even raising, depending on the action and the strength of your opponent’s range. If your draw also includes a flush draw or overcards, it becomes even more powerful.

Why is an OESD considered a premium draw?

Among drawing hands, an open-ended straight draw is one of the best because:

  • it has 8 outs to improve;
  • it can become a strong made hand on the turn or river;
  • it allows for profitable semi-bluffing;
  • it frequently wins large pots when completed.

Learning to recognize and correctly play an open-ended straight draw is an essential part of becoming a successful poker player.
