Rummy

Rummy is a classic card game that has various regional variations and is popular worldwide, known for its engaging gameplay that emphasizes skill and strategy.

Players

  • Rummy can be played with 2 to 6 players.

Deck

  • Rummy typically uses a standard deck of 52 cards, and sometimes jokers are included depending on the variation.

Dealing

  • In Rummy, the dealer is chosen randomly, and each player is dealt a specific number of cards—usually 10 cards for 2 to 4 players and 7 cards for 5 to 6 players.
  • The remaining cards form the draw pile, with one card placed face up to start the discard pile.

Gameplay

  • The objective of Rummy is to form sets and runs from the cards in hand.
  • A set consists of three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., three 7s), while a run consists of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 4, 5, 6 of hearts).
  • Players take turns drawing a card from either the draw pile or the discard pile, then discarding one card to the discard pile. Players aim to organize their cards into valid sets and runs. The turn continues in this manner until a player successfully melds all their cards into valid combinations and discards their last card.
  • Players can also lay down their melds on the table during their turn, allowing others to add cards to their own melds if possible.

Scoring

  • The game ends when a player successfully melds all their cards and discards their last card. The remaining players then reveal their hands.
  • In Rummy, points are calculated based on the cards left in players’ hands. Face cards (Kings, Queens, and Jacks) typically count as 10 points, aces can count as 1 or 11 points (depending on the variation), and numbered cards count at face value.
  • The player with the lowest total points from unmelded cards is the winner, while others accumulate penalty points based on their remaining cards.

Variations of Rummy may have different rules for scoring and melding, but the core objective remains the same: to form sets and runs while minimizing the points left in hand.
