Chinese poker

Chinese poker is a card game based on traditional poker hand rankings, crafted to be beginner-friendly. Players only need a basic grasp of these rankings to start playing. The game is characterized by a considerable element of luck, leading to unpredictable results and giving beginners a fair chance to win in the short term, even against more experienced competitors.

Players

  • The game can accommodate 2 to 4 players.

Deck

  • Chinese poker utilizes a standard 52-card deck.

Dealing

  • During each round, players are dealt 13 cards from the deck, typically face down. Players then create three hands: two five-card hands and one three-card hand.
  • Hands must be arranged in descending order of strength based on poker hand rankings. The strongest of the three hands is designated as the “back hand,” the second strongest is the “middle hand,” and the weakest is the “front hand.” The two five-card hands comprise the back and middle hands, while the three-card hand is positioned at the front.

Betting

  • There is no betting in Chinese Poker, though players agree to a unit size before the match starts.

Scoring

  • Points are awarded for each hand that beats the corresponding opponent’s hand:
    • For example, in a two-player game, you would score one point if your back hand is stronger than your opponent’s back hand, another point if your middle hand surpasses theirs, and yet another for the front hands.
    • If you manage to win all three hands against an opponent, you achieve a “scoop,” earning a three-point bonus.
    • In games involving 3 or 4 players, points are counted individually against each opponent, with the cumulative points determining your total score for that round.
  • Players can earn bonus points, known as “royalties,” for forming particularly strong hands. The specifics of these royalty bonuses may vary; some games may grant points for certain hand placements, while others offer points based on specific conditions related to the complete 13-card hand.
  • Once all points have been calculated, the next round begins.
