Pot odds are the ratio between the amount of money already in the pot and the amount you must call to stay in the hand. Pot odds help players decide whether a call is profitable based on the chance of completing a winning hand.
Pot odds are one of the most important poker math concepts for making correct decisions.
Pot odds formula
Pot Odds = Pot Size ÷ Call Amount
Or as a percentage
Call Amount ÷ (Pot Size + Call Amount)
This tells you the minimum winning chance you need for the call to be profitable.
Example of pot odds
The pot is $100 and your opponent bets $50.
Now the pot becomes $150, and you must call $50.
Pot odds = 50 ÷ (150 + 50) = 50 ÷ 200 = 25%
That means you need at least 25% equity (chance to win) to justify calling.
Pot odds vs hand odds
To use pot odds correctly, you compare them to your chances of hitting a draw.
Example:
- If you have a flush draw on the turn, you usually have about 20% chance to hit on the river.
- If the pot odds require 25%, calling is mathematically unprofitable.
Why pot odds matter
- helps players avoid losing calls
- improves decision-making in cash games and tournaments
- makes draw situations easier to calculate
- separates winning players from casual players
