Bet

Bet is the first contribution to the pot in each round.

Bet – what is it all about?

A bet commonly occurs when that hasn’t been any previous action in the betting round. It is commonly referred to obligatory bet, which a player makes to top up the pot. Then, other players must make a decision whether to fold and raise.

Bet size

Many players wonder what is an ideal bet size can be used in all spots. Of course, such a bet doesn’t exist. The current size depends on a number of factors, including

  • Betting round;
  • Board texture;
  • Stack depth;
  • A player with the best range advantage.

To illustrate the importance of these factors, let’s consider the following rule in one of the most well-known variations of Omaha – Omaha Pot Limited. At the first two betting rounds (pre-flop and flop), the bet is equal to the size of the BB. In the subsequent streets (turn and river), the size of bets increases and can be equal to the sum of two big blinds.

The purpose of bet

Besides the main function of a bet which is the replenishment of the pot, a bet is necessary for the following reasons:

  • Evaluation of hand strength. Even proficient players find it difficult to “read” the cards of their opponents. However, if you bet first, there is a great opportunity to analyse the subsequent actions of other players and adjust the strategy of your game.
  • Knocking out other players. If your hand is not too strong, remember about such a technique as a bluff. This trick can make your opponents doubt the strength of their cards and cause them to fold.
